1. Who we are

Essay Marker ("we", "us") provides an online service that helps educators grade essays and provide feedback using artificial intelligence, aligned with rubrics you provide. This policy describes how we handle personal information when you use our website and services.

2. Information we collect

  • Account information: name, email address, password hash (for email sign-in), profile image (if you use Google sign-in), and plan or billing identifiers associated with your account.
  • Educational content you upload: rubrics, assignment details, and student essay files or text you submit for grading. This may include student names or identifiers if you include them in submissions or class rosters.
  • Usage and technical data: approximate usage of AI features (for example token or cost estimates), session and authentication data, and standard server logs such as IP address, browser type, and timestamps, where applicable.
  • Google Classroom (optional): if you connect Google Classroom, we may access class and coursework information as permitted by the scopes you grant, to sync rosters or assignments as designed in the product.

3. How we use your information

  • To provide, operate, and improve Essay Marker, including AI-assisted grading and feedback.
  • To authenticate you, secure your account, and communicate about the service.
  • To process subscriptions and payments where you purchase a paid plan.
  • To enforce plan limits, prevent abuse, and comply with legal obligations.
  • To integrate optional features such as Google Classroom sync when you enable them.

4. AI processing

When you request grading or feedback, content you provide (such as essay text and rubric text) may be sent to our AI provider to generate scores and comments. We configure processing to serve the product; we do not use your content to train public models unless we separately notify you and obtain consent where required. Retention of inputs and outputs follows our general retention practices below unless a different period is required by law.

5. Third-party services

We rely on service providers that may process data on our behalf, including for example:

  • OpenAI or similar AI APIs for grading and feedback generation.
  • Stripe for payments and subscription management.
  • Hosting and storage (for example Vercel and blob storage) for running the application and storing uploaded files.
  • Googlefor sign-in and optional Google Classroom features, subject to Google's terms and your consent.

Each provider has its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them where relevant to your use of Essay Marker.

6. Cookies and sessions

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember preferences (such as theme), and protect the service. Essential cookies are required for authentication. You can control non-essential cookies through your browser settings where applicable.

7. Data retention and deletion

We retain account and content data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service, comply with law, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. You may request deletion of your account or specific data by contacting us; we will respond in line with applicable law. Some information may remain in backups for a limited period before being overwritten.

8. Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect data in transit and at rest. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children's privacy

Essay Marker is intended for educators and institutions. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children for marketing. If you believe a child has provided personal information inappropriately, please contact us so we can take appropriate steps.
